Worcester, MA- The Worcester State Baseball team (4-12, 3-2) returned to action at home today as they hosted Westfield State (15-6, 4-1) in the last of their series. This game was initially supposed to be played last Friday at Westfield, but as a result of the week's storm the game was moved to today, with Worcester State as the hosts but Westfield up to bat last in the 9-inning match.
Final
Westfield State: 3
Worcester State: 5
How it Happened:
With the beginning of the first inning, Worcester State junior Tyler Smith (Leominster, MA) gets home off a single from sophomore Nathan Thurber (Framingham, MA). The Lancers start the next inning with a 1-0 lead over the Owls.
Throughout the next innings, both teams played equally well in the field, making sure that their opponent did not get any runs. The catchers on both teams were constantly catching the pitched balls and calling perfect pitches, disallowing the hitters from making their plays. The field players were similarly active in preventing any scoring opportunities on the field.
This Lancers shutout was halted in the 5th inning by the Westfield Owls when Sam Palmer (Medfield, MA) hit a homerun which allowed him and Alex Martin (Shrewsbury, MA) to return to the dugout. The Owls tried to get another run home but the 3rd base runner was tagged by Worcester State first year Jeremy Delacruz, (Lowell, MA), stopping the Owls from making a play. Westfield State started the sixth inning in the lead with 2-1 on the scoreboard.
Westfield is continuing to connect in the 6th inning with Trey Faulkner (Springfield, MA) getting a run after a hit from John Bessette (Andover, MA). The Owls were now two runs ahead of the Lancers with a score of 3-1. The seventh inning would see lancer junior Tyler Smith (Leominster, MA) was hit by a ball that allowed sophomore Joe Auger (Lowell, MA) to score a run, changing the scoreboard to 3-2 but the scoring would not stop there as the 8th inning, Worcester State junior Mason Bates (Shrewsbury, MA) came across home to tie with the Owls. The Lancers would just keep rolling, with sophomores Gavin Wells (North Attleboro, MA) and Thurber hitting and scoring after a ball hit from first year Ryan Jewett (Natick, MA) which provided Worcester State the 5-3 lead.
The Lancers were able to keep the Owls from mounting a comeback in the bottom of the ninth to claim the series with the Owls grabbing two of three games.
What's Next:
