Women's Track Ranked 6th In Latest USTFCCCA Regional Rankings
MASCAC Weekly Women's Track Release
Westfield, MA --- Highlighted by junior Briana Wise (Worcester, MA/Burncoat), the Worcester State women's track and field team broke seven meet records and recorded 10 first place finishes this afternoon en route to capturing their second MASCAC Outdoor Championship this afternoon at the Jerry Gravel Track at Westfield State.
The Lancers won the meet by scoring 226 points while they scored 150.5 points in the New England Alliance standings to finish just 19 points way from Southern Maine's sum of 170. Their point total within the Alliance is also the most they have ever scored since the meet started in 1998.
Wise eclipsed the Alliance meet record with first in the 100 meters (12.16) and the 200 meters (25.17) before she helped the 4x100 meter relay team that was comprised of freshman Brittany Hodgerney (Leicester, MA), sophomore Christy Deininger (N. Attleboro, MA) and senior Sarah Rafferty (Uxbridge, MA) accomplish the same feat with a winning time of 48.17.
The 4x400 meter relay that was made up of Hodgerney, sophomore Megan Taylor (Danvers, MA) and freshmen classmates Kim West (Harvard, MA) and Alexandria McMahon (E. Longmeadow, MA) also shattered the meet and school record of 4:03.48.
Deininger also distinguished herself with first in the 100 meter hurdles (14.86) while Taylor recorded the best time in the 400 meter hurdles (1:05.05). Both were new MASCAC records.
Rafferty added second in the 200 (26.17) and third in the 100 (12.58) while Deininger was runner-up in the 100 (12.36).
In the field, first-year Katie Cataldo (Attleboro, MA) impressed with a new MASCAC toss in the javelin that was first overall and second in the Alliance (40.31m/132-05) while classmate Alyssa Jasper (Rockland, MA) won both the discus (35.59m/116-09) and the shot put (11.41m/37-05). Jasper finished the meet with fourth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:08.00)
Third-year Brittany Grueter (Foxboro, MA) rounded out the first-place MASCAC finishers with a time of 42:06.46 in the 10,000.
The distance group was also paced by junior Erin Donohue (Saugus, MA) and sophomore Ali Barrett (Hingham, MA) who placed second (19:17.22) and third (19:25.17) in the MASCAC in the 5,000, respectively, as senior Meg Plant (Franklin, MA) added third in the 10,000 (42:33.27).
Freshman Amanda Caldarone (Danvers, MA) was second in the long jump (5.17m/16-11.50) and sophomore Gaby Gonet (Agawam, MA) placed third in the pole vault (2.75m/9-00.25).
Sophomore Nicole Hanson (N. Dighton, MA) was second in the javelin (35.48m/116-05) followed by Jasper who was fourth (35.77m/115-08). Second-year Hannah Werneth (N. Yarmouth, MA) was the runner-up in the shot put (11.33m/37-02.50) and Taylor cleared fourth in the high jump (1.50m/4-11).
Next week select Lancers will compete at the Division III New England Championships hosted by MIT. The Blue and Gold look to finish in the top 10 as they placed sixth as a team during the indoor season.
